Project empowers teachers to foster student curiosity
A small group early years educators from 缅北禁地s recently participated in a project that reflects the district鈥檚 commitment to fostering inclusive, student-centered learning environments.
The Hub of Excellence in Experiential Teaching (H.E.E.T.) pilot offered a unique opportunity for educators to explore collaborative, creative, and concept-based approaches that support deeper student engagement. Grounded in curiosity, inquiry, and hands-on discovery, this approach complements traditional methods by placing emphasis on the voices, questions, and lived experiences of students.
Over the course of the 2024-25 school year, participating teachers engaged in professional learning, designed to build their skills in creating classrooms that are inclusive, supportive and centered on student curiosity and exploration. Using the H.E.E.T. framework, teachers focused on building strong learning partnerships with students by working alongside them to explore ideas and build understanding together. This approach helps students feel heard, valued, and more engaged in their learning.
This work directly supports our district`s commitment to creating including learning classrooms (Focus Area聽1: Inclusive Learning Community) by聽giving teachers new strategies and tools to help聽students success and feel like they belong. It also supports Focus Area 2: Systems of Care and Support, through its prioritization of play-based, experiential learning that lays a strong foundation for lifelong growth and development, which is an essential part of building healthy, connected school communities.
Developed by certified B.C. teacher and pedagogical consultant Misty Paterson through her Pop-Up Studio organization, the H.E.E.T. model reflects the principles found in both B.C.鈥檚 curriculum and the BC Early Learning Framework.
缅北禁地s is reflecting on the pilot’s impact and exploring how the H.E.E.T. approach may support future professional learning and classroom practice across the district. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
