Queen Elizabeth Elementary Expansion Project Moves Forward

New Westminster, B.C. – Progress on the three-storey addition to Queen Elizabeth Elementary (QEE) is steadily advancing, bringing the Queensborough learning community one step closer to 21 more classrooms at the school.
Concrete is currently being poured on-site and is expected to finish by mid-summer. The first phase of construction, which ended in March, saw the safe and successful installation of 209 steel piles to support the new building’s foundation. Once preliminary groundwork is complete, the structure’s steel frame will begin rising, with hopes of completing the work before the end of the year.
In addition to the new expansion, some minor improvements are also planned for the existing elementary school. Upgrades to the parking lot, including refinements to the entrance, are scheduled, making drop-off and pick-up easier for families. QEE’s main building will also receive a fresh coat of paint on both its walls and roof.
In June 2021, the Ministry of Education and Child Care approved a $20.1 million investment to support a 13-classroom expansion at Queen Elizabeth Elementary. The announcement was – and remains – a significant step towards addressing classroom space shortfalls in the fast-growing Queensborough community. The third-floor expansion was a high priority within the Long Range Facilities Plan. Following board advocacy, the Ministry approved the additional space for QEE on October 24, 2023, bringing the provincial government’s total investment up to $34.03 million.
